CD Baby Launches In-Store Distribution
When I was promoting The Rhones (now defunk) I set their disk up on CD Baby
for online sales since not only do you sell your music through them but
they get your disk on all the major on-line music sites such as itunes.
For in-store distribution I used The Orchard,they
do not sell direct but they provide both online and in-store
distribution. I received the email below announcing CD Baby has
launched in-store distribution for free to all current members as a 1
stop distro resource. Although this is just one component, if no one
knows about your music, no one is going to buy it. Thus it comes back
to marketing and driving awareness of your music for online downloads
and to stores to order your disk. This is a great new addition to the
CD Baby portfolio the only complaint I have with them is to stay
competitive they really need to redesign their website. It seems to be
designed by programmers and in today’s market that look is not going to
fly for much longer. The good thing is that offer a much higher rate of
return than other distribution models, great service and have been a
trusted indie music resource since 1998. Check out the details.

I have heard the whole thing about how CD baby should redesign their website. But I had an interesting discussion with someone who made a some-what good point, but as a designer, it is a hard point for me to swallow. They heard that CD baby has kept the site looking that way because they don’t want to scare bands off by looking “expensive”. And to show that they are more concerned with the function of the site and not the look. I am not sure if that argument is solid. I tend to be attracted to things that look nice (I have to admit that I have bought products because I liked the label design). I am wondering if I have this opinion because I am a designer. I wonder what non designers think. anyone???
